Brian Thirkettle, 1st Dan (Shodan)
At what club do you train?I tend to train at all clubs in the association. When did you start training? 1999 Why did you choose Ju Jitsu over other martial arts? Its simple, covers all aspects of self defence. Did you do other sports/martial arts before Ju Jitsu? Aikido. Tell us about your first Ju Jitsu class. I was the guy standing at the end of the line with tracksuit bottoms on thinking "my God!" When did you think about getting your Black Belt? After I had done a few belts, I thought I can do this, eventually I achieved what I had set out to do. Was it difficult to attain? Yes!! one of the hardest things I have ever done for a very long time. What does a “black Belt” mean to you? A new beginning, an opening to future learning. Ever had to use Ju Jitsu for real? I started Ju Jitsu because I had got myself into a potentially bad situation, the next time that happened a simple body drop defused the danger. Do you enter martial arts competitions? Yes. Has Ju Jitsu changed your life in any positive or negative way? All positive, have gained confidence and met some great people. Even the pains positive! What do you see as the advantages of Ju Jitsu? Self confidence, fitness and a better outgoing attitude. How much time does your training require? As much as I can give it! If you could advise a beginner on one thing about Ju Jitsu what would it be? At first you think I can't do this! But along the way there are so many milestones that you achieve, it's well worth sticking with it. BACK |
